About

The place, in context

Philippe Auguste raised the Louvre in 1190 as a fortress, and its medieval moat still runs under the Sully Wing. Louvre tickets to see Mona Lisa now admit visitors to a building that served six centuries as arsenal, treasury and royal residence before it held a single work for the public. That change arrived in 1793, when the revolutionary government opened the palace as a museum with 537 paintings. Leonardo da Vinci's portrait was not among the first arrivals. Leonardo carried the poplar panel out of Italy in 1516, invited north by François I. The king bought it for the royal collection at Fontainebleau. Napoleon Bonaparte hung la Joconde in his bedroom at the Tuileries before returning it to the museum in 1804. In August 1911 a handyman named Vincenzo Peruggia lifted the panel from its wall and walked out of the building with it under his smock. Recovery took two years. The empty hooks drew larger crowds than the painting ever had, and a Renaissance portrait became a global name. Louvre tickets to see Mona Lisa tickets carry the standard adult non-EEA rate of 32 EUR and cover the permanent collections, which run to roughly 35,000 exhibited works across some 73,000 square metres. The portrait occupies one wall of the Salle des États, in the Denon Wing, set behind laminated glass on a slab of reinforced concrete. It measures 77 by 53 centimetres. Its surface holds no visible brushstroke, the result of sfumato, a technique of glazes laid down in layers thin enough to blur every contour. Ieoh Ming Pei's glass pyramid, completed in 1989, gathered a scattered set of doors into a single descent beneath the Cour Napoléon. The rest of the palace rewards a slower reading. The Venus de Milo, unearthed on Melos in 1820, stands within a few rooms of Antonio Canova's Psyche Revived. The Winged Victory of Samothrace commands the Daru staircase. Veronese's Wedding at Cana, at nearly 70 square metres the largest canvas in the collection, faces Leonardo across the same room and is routinely missed by the crowd turning the other way. Guided Louvre tickets to see Mona Lisa tours and skip-the-line Louvre routes through the Denon Wing tend to fold these works into one sequence, which is the older logic of the place: the portrait as one node in a network of Paris landmarks rather than a destination standing alone. Géricault's Raft of the Medusa hangs a corridor away, and most visitors meet it whether or not they intended to.

"The empty hooks drew larger crowds than the painting ever had."
Your experience

What a tour day looks like

A step-by-step walkthrough of the visit — what you'll see, how long each stage takes, and the details that matter.

Your Louvre tickets to see Mona Lisa tour starts under glass. You descend the spiral beneath Pei's pyramid into the hall below the Cour Napoléon, where the light drops and the noise flattens, and you follow the signs for Denon rather than Sully or Richelieu. The staircase lifts you past the Winged Victory of Samothrace, wings forward, lit from below. Most people photograph it without stopping. You turn into the Grande Galerie. Four hundred metres of Italian painting run ahead of you, Titian and Raphael and Correggio hung at shoulder height, and the room thins as it goes because almost everyone is walking rather than looking. Halfway along, a doorway on your right opens into the Salle des États. The crowd is the first thing you see, not the picture. You join a loose column of perhaps two hundred people that shifts forward in slow pulses, phones raised above heads. At the barrier you get roughly thirty seconds at two metres' distance. The panel is smaller than the reproductions suggested, warmer in tone, the varnish gone amber at the edges. Then you turn around. Veronese's Wedding at Cana fills the wall behind you, seventy square metres of wedding guests and musicians, and there is nobody standing in front of it at all.
